Customs Intercept Illicit Substances Worth MVR 7.1 Million

The Maldives Customs Service has intercepted 3.48 kilograms of drugs, valued at over MVR 7.1 million, in two separate operations over the past week. 

In a statement on Thursday, Customs reported that the first haul was discovered during a search of the luggage of a 33-year-old Brazilian woman who arrived in the Maldives from Brazil on Saturday, October 5th. This stash, weighing 2.44 kilograms, tested positive for cocaine, with an estimated street value of MVR 6,100,000.

The second seizure occurred during an inspection of packages delivered via a post on Monday, October 7. One of the packages contained 1.04 kilograms of a substance that tested positive for heroin, valued at approximately MVR 1,040,000. Authorities have detained a 40-year-old Maldivian man who attempted to collect the package from customs. 

Customs stated that both the Maldivian man and the Brazilian woman, along with the confiscated drugs, have been handed over to the police for further investigation.
