Debate Emerges Over Minister’s Tweet Linking Pornography and Reproductive Health

A recent tweet by the Deputy Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation, Hassan Zihan has ignited a heated debate surrounding the causes of deteriorating reproductive health in the Maldives. Zihan contends that watching pornography is the primary factor contributing to declining reproductive health and questions why a growing number of individuals are resorting to In Vitro Fertilization (IVF).

The Fertility Support Community expressed deep worry, deeming the remarks unacceptable. Despite a clear upward trend in infertility rates in the Maldives, there remains a pervasive lack of public awareness, coupled with persistent negative attitudes and stigmatization towards those grappling with infertility. These challenges further hinder access to adequate healthcare.

With over 450 registered members, the Fertility Support Community is compiling essential statistics on each member, representing a groundbreaking effort as the first comprehensive infertility statistics collection in the Maldives. The association underscores the importance of discussing infertility with reference to accurate statistics and research findings. They argue that addressing the issue without these elements undermines its gravity.
