The limit on debit cards for Umrah pilgrims has been increased to USD 1,500 for those travelling during Ramadan and on the first six days of the upcoming Shawwal month.

The Bank of Maldives (BML) announced the change in a statement issued today, stating that the increased limit would only be applicable in Saudi Arabia and restricted to one debit card per customer. The decision follows President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s directive on 10 February, instructing BML and the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) to increase the dollar limit for Umrah pilgrims this Ramadan.

To facilitate pilgrims travelling with Umrah groups, BML has shared procedural details with the relevant groups and advised pilgrims to obtain information directly from their respective organisers. Independent Umrah pilgrims can adjust their card limit by submitting a copy of their passport and ticket via BML’s mobile application at least five official working days before departure.

In addition to the USD 1,500 limit, BML stated that debit cards would retain their existing monthly transaction cap of USD 250. The bank will also continue to sell USD 500 to all Umrah pilgrims as part of its foreign exchange services.
