The forthcoming parliamentary session has scheduled a decision regarding the dismissal of Speaker of the People’s Majlis of the Maldives, Mohamed Nasheed.

The motion to remove Nasheed from his position, initiated by the ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), has been placed on the agenda for tomorrow’s session.

The origins of this motion trace back to June when a no-confidence motion garnered the signatures of 54 Members of Parliament (MPs) before Nasheed voluntarily resigned from his post.

Subsequently, in adherence to parliamentary rules, a 14-day notice was issued concerning the matter. However, as July drew to a close, Parliament adjourned without addressing the motion due to a deadlock.

The parliamentary gridlock was compounded by the impeachment of Vice-Speaker Eva Abdullah and the inability of political parties to reach a consensus on the distribution of seats within parliamentary standing committees following the departure of 13 MPs, including key positions on the General Committee.

To address this impasse, there were proposals to convene extraordinary sessions during the parliamentary recess for the purpose of establishing standing committees and addressing no-confidence motions. Following contentious debates over committee composition, no further extraordinary sessions were convened.

The parliamentary sessions scheduled for the 28th and 29th of last month were cancelled due to a lack of quorum, as many MPs were actively engaged in the presidential campaign across the nation. In the absence of scheduled sessions and with no official explanation, the agenda for tomorrow’s session is expected to address the way forward regarding the pending resolution.
