President-elect Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced the establishment of a dedicated ministry aimed at fostering growth and development within the construction sector.
Addressing an event hosted by the Maldives National Association of Construction Industry (MNACI), President-elect Dr. Mohamed Muizzu remarked that the construction sector in the Maldives, despite being the second-largest, is not expanding at the desired rate. Dr Muizzu attributed this phenomenon to the consistent practice of previous governments, which have historically implemented policies that coalesce the management of the construction sector with that of various other sectors.
Pointing out that previous governments have also tried to boost the construction sector, the President-elect said it would be taken forward under his leadership. He said a special ministry would be set up for the construction sector.

“The construction industry has consistently seemed to be integrated into multiple ministries. Nevertheless, we are determined to propel the construction sector forward by creating a dedicated ministry encompassing this essential industry,” stated President-elect Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.
The President-elect noted that forming a dedicated ministry for the construction sector would enhance its focus and priority. Dr. Muizzu added that it would facilitate obtaining foreign assistance for the sector.
At the meeting, individuals with extensive experience in the construction sector within the country, along with several entrepreneurs, brought attention to the challenges hindering the industry’s growth. During the meeting, multiple business leaders expressed their grievances to the President-elect. They discussed issues such as the reduction in foreign exchange inflow to the Maldives resulting from expatriate workers, outstanding payments from various government agencies, diminishing trust among suppliers, concerns regarding potential business closures, and the absence of support from the Ministry of Finance. A group of people actively participated in these discussions.
