The Ministry of Cities, Local Government and Public Works has commenced the demolition of three structurally compromised and unused buildings in Malé City, citing public safety concerns.

The buildings identified for demolition—Orchid Plaza, New Plaza, and House Plaza—are located in the Maafannu ward. All three had previously sustained significant fire damage, rendering them unsafe for occupancy or use. The Ministry stated that the decision to proceed with demolition was taken in view of the risk these deteriorated structures posed to surrounding residents.

The demolition process will begin with Orchid Plaza. Once the site is cleared, the land will be utilised to facilitate the subsequent demolition of New Plaza. The Ministry noted that the demolitions would be conducted using appropriate methods, including the use of electricity and gas cutters, due to the buildings’ steel frame and concrete construction.

Minister of Cities, Local Government and Public Works, Adam Shareef Umar, stated that the work is being carried out with a strong emphasis on public safety and minimal disruption to nearby residents. The Ministry is also observing restrictions on working hours in residential areas to avoid causing inconvenience to the public.

This initiative follows earlier efforts by the Ministry to remove other derelict and hazardous buildings in the capital as part of an ongoing programme to enhance urban safety and improve the city’s built environment.
