Health Protection Agency (HPA) data for January 2026 show a marked increase in multiple infectious diseases across the Maldives compared to previous years, with dengue, acute respiratory infections (ARI), viral fevers, and acute gastroenteritis (AGE) all on the rise.

Dengue cases reached 647 in January 2026, up from 424 in the same month last year. The highest incidence rates were reported in Vaavu atoll (75 cases per 10,000 population), Kaafu atoll (71), and Gaaf Alif atoll (47).

ARI cases surged to 34,840, compared to 29,461 in January 2025, with Alif Dhaal atoll (1,906), Laamu atoll (1,368), and Faafu atoll (1,340) reporting the highest per-capita rates. Viral fever cases increased to 12,195, up from 9,630 in 2025, while AGE rose sharply to 7,792, compared with 3,405 in 2025.

Influenza-like illness also increased during January. Of 791 individuals tested for influenza, 96 were confirmed positive, though the overall testing volume was lower than in January 2025, when 1,511 tests were conducted.

The HPA has issued public health guidance to curb the spread of these diseases. For dengue, authorities recommend eliminating mosquito breeding sites, using repellents containing DEET, Picaridin, or IR3535, and keeping doors and windows closed during peak mosquito activity at dawn and dusk. For respiratory illnesses, frequent handwashing, avoiding crowded places when unwell, and seeking medical attention if fever persists or symptoms worsen are advised. To prevent gastrointestinal illness, the HPA urges strict food and water hygiene and the use of oral rehydration solutions if diarrhea or vomiting occurs.

The agency stressed that proactive measures at both household and community levels are crucial to limit disease transmission amid the ongoing surge.
