President Dr Mohamed Muizzu said yesterday it is more important to develop talented youth than to develop tall infrastructural buildings.
He said this at the inauguration of Maldives National Service at a special ceremony held at the Composite Training Centre (CTC) in Maafilaafush, as the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF). To mark the occasion, he formally handed over the Flag of the Maldives National Service.
In his address, the President underlined that true national development depends on nurturing a strong and dynamic younger generation. He said raising patriotic, honourable, and capable youth who value Islam and their national identity is far more significant than constructing infrastructure.
“Truthfully, I believe it is more important to develop a youth that loves their nation, Islam, is prideful and talented, than developing a 50-floor building,” President Muizzu stated.

The President urged participants to view the training as a chance to secure a brighter future and achieve personal growth. He noted that those completing the programme would emerge with discipline, a deeper sense of national identity, and devotion to Islam.
The Maldives National Service was established to cultivate citizens who uphold national identity, demonstrate responsibility, and are physically fit, spiritually grounded, and mentally resilient. Its three-month Initial Training Programme includes instruction in national identity, responsible citizenship, education, leadership, and language proficiency, alongside physical training, discipline, and fitness. Participants also receive training in first aid, firefighting, and self-defence.
The first phase of the programme has enrolled 343 participants, aged between 16 and 29, from 107 islands. They were selected from 1,242 applicants. Each participant will receive a monthly allowance of MVR 6,000 during the training period.
The ceremony was attended by First Lady Sajidha Mohamed, senior government officials, cabinet ministers, and MNDF leadership.
