The government has announced the plan to develop new urban centres in the northern and southern regions of the country, aiming to accommodate and serve a population of 100,000 in each zone.

The initiative, part of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s broader development agenda, was detailed by Minister of Housing, Land, and Urban Development, Dr Ali Haidar Ahmed.

President Muizzu has designated seven islands for urban development and proposed two special development zones. The Northern Development Zone will encompass the four northernmost atolls, while the Southern Development Zone will cover the four southernmost atolls.

Speaking to PSM News about the initiative, Dr Haidar emphasised the importance of expanding urbanisation beyond the densely populated capital, Malé. He noted that the northern and southern regions, which include many inhabited islands located far from the capital, face challenges in accessing quality services due to their dispersed populations.

“The southern islands have a population of around 200,000, while the northern islands are home to approximately 55,000 people,” Dr Haidar explained. “It will be extremely difficult to provide high-quality services unless the population in these zones reaches 100,000. Larger population centres are crucial for the viability of tertiary-level services. Once developed, these zones will offer high-quality services and better opportunities for residents.”

The plan also envisions creating smaller urban centres within the larger zones, equipped with comprehensive service facilities. These developments aim to generate employment, expand tourism opportunities, and foster private enterprise.
