President Dr Mohamed Muizzu met with Island Councils, Women’s Development Committees (WDCs), and heads of local institutions from Dhonfanu, Kihaadhoo, Dharavandhoo, and Hithaadhoo from Baa Atoll yesterday to discuss each island’s most pressing development needs. All four councils raised concerns over infrastructure delays, health service shortages, space constraints in public facilities, and the need for projects to address land use, coastal protection, and community amenities.

In Dhonfanu, the meeting took place at the island’s school. Council members raised concerns over delays in the water and sewerage projects, the development of the football field, and the proposed land reclamation concept. They also called for a new council building to address space constraints and highlighted the shortage of nurses at the health centre. It was agreed to proceed with upgrading the school to ease overcrowding.

In Kihaadhoo, discussions at the island’s school focused on delays in water and sewerage works, strengthening the electricity network, relocating the powerhouse, and addressing school space issues. The Council also requested a designated picnic island, revisions to the RTL ferry route, a science laboratory, and an ambulance for the health centre.

In Dharavandhoo, the meeting at the Island Council Secretariat centred on infrastructure and service challenges. The Council urged immediate action to address the deterioration of Dharavandhoo Airport, called for a US dollar ATM, and proposed a Biosphere Reserve Office for Hanifaru. Other concerns included coastal erosion, improved sea access, a 30-bed hospital, expanded secretariat space, an eco-centre, a convention centre, floodlights for the football ground, and road upgrades.

In Hithaadhoo, the Council meeting highlighted land shortages, housing needs, changes to the harbour project, and tourism development. The Council also sought solutions for erosion, a youth centre, expanded health centre capacity, and measures to address school overcrowding.

In each meeting, President Dr Muizzu assured that the Government would review the concerns raised and work towards practical solutions. He was accompanied by Cabinet Ministers and senior officials from State-Owned Enterprises, who also provided updates on ongoing development projects.
