Education Minister Dr Ismail Shafeeu has stated that the discovery of vaping devices in schools has fallen to a level so low that it is now almost nonexistent.

The remark was made during a telethon held to commemorate the implementation of the generational smoking ban, which came into effect on 1 November. The legislation, ratified by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu in May, amends the Tobacco Control Act to prohibit the sale of tobacco products to individuals born on or after 1 January 2007.

The minister highlighted that before the government’s anti-smoking measures, around 50 to 60 vaping devices were being discovered daily in schools across the Malé area. However, following the introduction of the vaping ban and other restrictions, such discoveries have nearly ceased.

Dr Shafeeu attributed this change to the administration’s campaign against smoking, which includes a ban on vapes and e-cigarettes, as well as increased import duties and taxes on cigarettes. He said the government’s efforts aimed to protect students’ health and foster a smoke-free generation.

He further described the generational smoking ban as a proud national achievement that should be celebrated by parents, teachers and students.
