DNR and DJA to Provide Digital Data to Male’ City Council After Fire
The Department of National Registration (DNR) and the Department of Judicial Administration (DJA) have committed to supplying Malé City Council with digital copies of crucial documents and data lost in last Thursday’s fire.
Mayor Adam Azim announced during a council meeting that discussions with the DNR and DJA had resulted in assurances of full cooperation. The DJA possesses digital copies of the city’s housing registries and related court rulings, which will be shared with the council to aid in restoring lost information.
Azim emphasised that integrating this data with the council’s existing digital records would help establish a fully digital management system for the future.
Deputy Mayor Ahmed Nareesh highlighted a significant development: the council will now receive digital copies of marriage certificates needed for birth certificate applications. This initiative will eliminate the need for citizens to submit physical copies of marriage certificates when applying for birth certificates.
The fire, which broke out in the Tin Building housing the Housing Ministry and Construction and Infrastructure Ministry, also damaged the adjacent Green Building. Both structures were rendered unusable, resulting in the loss of numerous vital city council documents.
The Vital Registration Office, responsible for managing birth and death certificates as well as residence and land registrations, has relocated its services to the first floor of Amin Avenue in Hulhumalé. Meanwhile, documents salvaged from the fire have been moved to the Galolhu Madhurasa hall to facilitate continued operations in Malé.
The government has since allocated Thaajuddeen School’s hall as a temporary workspace for the office. Preparations for this new location are set to begin on Tuesday, according to the city council.
