Dr. Muizzu Emerges as Winner in Presidential Election 2023

Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, representing the People’s National Congress (PNC), is predicted to win the presidential election 2023, according to preliminary results.

Preliminary results indicate that Dr. Muizzu secured 53.92% of the votes, positioning him in the lead. Incumbent President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, representing the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), trailed with 46.08%, as of the latest count of 581 out of 586 vote boxes.

In the initial round of the presidential election held on September 9, Dr. Muizzu emerged as the frontrunner with a significant 46.06% of the vote, while President Solih secured 39.05%, establishing themselves as the primary contenders for the runoff.

The election, held today, saw a total of 282,804 eligible voters participate in the runoff. The voter turnout stood at 86 percent, a notable increase from the 79 percent recorded during the initial round of voting, yet still representing the lowest turnout in a presidential election.
