The dredging phase of the Rasmale project in the K. Fushidhiggaru Falhu lagoon has accelerated significantly following the deployment of one of the world’s largest dredgers.

The government confirmed that the large trailer suction hopper dredger has been mobilised to increase the pace of reclamation for the development.

According to information shared on Monday by President Mohamed Muizzu, the dredger “Cristóbal Colón” of Jan De Nul began reclamation operations the same day, tripling the speed of land creation for the project. The administration described Rasmale as a fully net-zero carbon smart eco-city and the largest climate adaptation initiative undertaken in the Maldives.

The President outlined the mobilisation timeline, stating that the dredger arrived at the site on 30 November, delivered its first load on 1 December, began dredging at 05:00, and commenced discharging at 11:41 on Monday.

He noted that the enhanced dredging capacity will support the government’s aim to complete all land reclamation required for housing in the Malé region by March or April.
