A pickup-truck driver has been fined MVR 750 and had his driving licence confiscated after blocking an ambulance while unloading goods on a narrow one-way street in Malé.
A video circulating on social media shows the ambulance sounding its siren as it becomes stuck behind a small pickup that had stopped in the middle of the road to unload items. Despite the siren and repeated honking from other vehicles, the unloading continued. After completing the unloading, the driver is seen speaking to the individual recording the incident, although the ambulance siren makes the audio unclear.
Police confirmed that the driver was penalised under traffic regulations, resulting in a fine of MVR 750 and the temporary confiscation of his licence. The Ministry of Transport stated that it is also investigating the matter and will take further action if necessary.
Obstructing narrow streets to unload goods remains a common issue in the capital and frequently causes delays for emergency vehicles navigating Malé’s congested roads.
