The Elections Commission of Maldives (ECM) has reported that 10,028 individuals have re-registered to vote in the forthcoming parliamentary elections.
According to the ECM’s announcement, a total of 11,169 online re-registration applications were submitted via eFaas during the stipulated time frame. Of these, 1,141 applications were declined, leaving 10,028 applications approved for participation in the upcoming elections.
Secretary-General of the ECM, Hassan Zakariyya, noted that the re-registration turnout for this electoral cycle appears to be comparatively lower than in previous instances.
In response to the re-registration statistics, the EC has made decisions regarding the voting arrangements in overseas locations. Voting will be conducted in cities abroad where a minimum of 150 individuals have re-registered.
However, due to the relatively low re-registration figures, voting will only take place in three foreign countries: Trivandrum in India, Colombo in Sri Lanka, and Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia. Notably, voting will not be held in the United Kingdom, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Malaysia.
A total of 389 candidates are vying for 93 parliamentary seats in this year’s elections. The highest number of candidates hail from the main opposition party, MDP, which is contesting 90 seats. This is closely followed by the main ruling coalition, PPM-PNC, which is fielding candidates for 89 seats.
