The Election Commission of Maldives (ECM) has announced the need for approximately 7,000 officials to oversee polling stations during the upcoming parliamentary elections in March.

ECM Chairman Fuad Taufeeq has urged interested individuals to apply through the Commission’s online portal, accessible via e-Faas. Eligible candidates must be between 18 and 65 years old and should not hold a senior position within any political party.

In light of the parliamentary elections aligning with the month of Ramadan, ECM has introduced a Ramadan allowance for officials, in addition to their regular salaries. Each official is set to receive MVR 500 as a Ramadan allowance, along with additional compensation of MVR 250 for breakfast and MVR 100 for Taraweeh if the Commission does not provide food and tea.

The salary structure for officials in the parliamentary elections is as follows:

  • Polling Station Manager: MVR 2,650
  • Assistant Head of Centre: MVR 2,350
  • Official: MVR 2,250
  • Reserve Officer: MVR 1,000

ECM emphasised that the additional budget required for the increased salaries has already been allocated. ECM further announced a deadline for officer applications on Tuesday, March 5, at 3:00 p.m., with training programs for officials scheduled to commence on the 24th of the following month.

Given the administrative challenges associated with holding elections after Ramadan, the ECM has determined the fixed date of March for this year’s parliamentary elections.
