ECM Dissolves Maldives Thirdway Democrats After Membership Shortfall
The Election Commission of the Maldives (ECM) has officially dissolved the Maldives Thirdway Democrats (MTD), a political party founded by former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb Abdul Ghafoor, after it failed to meet the required membership threshold of 3,000.
Under the Political Parties Act, the commission has the authority to dissolve a party that does not reach the minimum number of members within three months of being given the opportunity to do so. According to the EC register, the MTD had 2,272 members as of June last year.
The commission has urged the public to submit any outstanding debts related to the MTD by 31 August. The EC previously dissolved the Maldives Reform Movement (MRM), established by former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, for a similar reason.
