The Election Commission of the Maldives (ECM) is launching a major public awareness programme to strengthen the country’s democratic environment ahead of next year’s local council and Women’s Development Committee elections.

The initiative will take place across 36 islands in 12 atolls, started yesterday and continuing until Thursday.

The programme aims to deepen citizens’ understanding of the Maldivian democratic system, covering its operational mechanisms, core principles, and multi-party framework. Participants will also receive guidance on their fundamental rights, the responsibilities of those engaged in the democratic process, and the functioning of the electoral system. The sessions are designed for a wide audience, including eligible voters of all ages, with targeted outreach to the nation’s youth.

A team of 24 trained facilitators, certified through the ECM’s Training of Trainers programme, will conduct the sessions. The initiative involves collaboration with key institutions, including the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives, the Anti-Corruption Commission, and the Fuvahmulah City Learning Centre of the Islamic University of Maldives. Public Service Media will act as the official media partner, ensuring information about the programme reaches a broad audience.
