The Election Commission of Maldives (ECM) has announced revisions to the list of eligible voters for the forthcoming parliamentary elections, in response to complaints received.
The adjustments were made public yesterday following a period during which the voter list was open for scrutiny and grievances, commencing on the 10th of this month and concluding on the 21st.
A total of 325 complaints were lodged by the deadline, primarily centred on three issues: changes of residence (185 complaints), inclusion of deceased individuals on the list (131 complaints), and omissions of names from the list (two complaints).
In response to these concerns, the ECM has issued an amended voters list, and has stated its readiness to receive further complaints pertaining to this revised version.
The ECM has outlined the procedure for verifying and challenging alterations to the voters list, stating that individuals can check for changes by sending an SMS to 1414 followed by their National Identification (NID) number.
The window for submitting complaints regarding the amended list will be open from Tuesday until the 10th of next month, with specified hours for submission on different days. Complaints can be lodged in person at the Election Center at Dharubaaruge in Male’, or at council offices on other islands, and can also be submitted via email.
The parliamentary elections are scheduled to take place on March 17th, with a total of 284,327 individuals eligible to cast their votes. Among these eligible voters, there are 139,165 women and 145,162 men.
