The Elections Commission of Maldives (ECM) will conduct awareness programmes across 36 islands in 12 atolls from 28 November to 2 December 2025, ahead of the upcoming local council and Women’s Development Committee (WDC) elections.

According to the commission, the initiative aims to educate the public on the functioning of the Maldivian democratic system, the principles of the multi-party system, citizens’ rights, and the responsibilities of those involved in electoral processes. The programme also seeks to raise awareness about the electoral system and the forthcoming council and WDC elections through 2026.

The awareness sessions will take place in Haa Alifu, Shaviyani, Noonu, Raa, Lhaviyani, Alifu Dhaalu, Faafu, Thaa, Gaafu Alifu and Gaafu Dhaalu atolls, as well as in Addu City and Fuvahmulah City.

In addition to sessions for eligible voters of all ages, the programme will feature youth-focused activities, ECM said. Twenty-four facilitators have completed the necessary training to deliver the sessions.

The Human Rights Commission of the Maldives, the Anti-Corruption Commission, and the Islamic University of Maldives Learning Centre in Fuvahmulah will participate in the programme to help strengthen the country’s democratic environment.

In October, ECM President Mohamed Zahid said the local council and WDC elections are scheduled for 28 March 2026, with candidacy set to open on 17 January 2026. The commission estimates election costs to range between MVR 70 million and MVR 80 million.
