The Elections Commission of the Maldives (ECM) has announced the forthcoming by-elections set to take place in March, encompassing four islands across the country.
Scheduled for March 17, the initial by-election will see simultaneous voting in two islands, aiming to fill the position of a female member for the Thakandhoo Island Council in Haa Alifu Atoll and elect a council member for Velidhoo Island Council in Noonu Atoll. Notably, these by-elections align with the parliamentary elections, as stipulated by the electoral body.
Subsequently, on March 30, another by-election is slated to transpire, concentrating on the selection of a female member for the Maafaru Island Council in Noonu Atoll and the president of Maduvvari Island Council in Meemu Atoll.
The nomination period for the Thakandhoo and Velidhoo by-elections concluded on February 14, as confirmed by the ECM. Meanwhile, nominations for the Maafaru and Maduvvari by-elections will continue to be accepted until February 28.
Approximately 4,080 eligible voters are anticipated to participate in these by-elections, reflecting a significant civic engagement within the respective island communities.
