The Elections Commission of Maldives (ECM) announced on Thursday the final results of the parliamentary election held last Sunday.
As per legal obligations, the commission unveiled the conclusive voting outcomes within seven days of the polling day. ECM stated that no ballot boxes necessitated a recount, enabling the prompt release of the final results.
Previously, the commission had disclosed preliminary results on Monday evening. The preliminary breakdown revealed the following allocations:
PPM: 66 seats
MDP: 12 seats
Independent Candidates: 11 seats
MDA: Two seats
Jumhoory Party: One seat
MNP: One seat
A total of 93 MPs were elected across constituencies, representing over 200,000 eligible voters.
The ruling PNC fielded candidates for 90 seats, while MDP contested for 89 seats. Notably, this year saw 130 independent candidates vying for positions.
Furthermore, 10 candidates from the Jumhoory Party (JP) and 39 from The Democrats participated in the electoral process. Although JP leader Qasim Ibrahim secured his Maamigili seat, The Democrats did not secure any seats.
In a parallel to this year’s results, the previous parliamentary election witnessed the then-ruling MDP securing a supermajority, claiming 65 constituencies, equivalent to 75% of the seats. Conversely, the opposition PPM/PNC coalition secured only eight seats.
