ECM Urges Political Parties to be Transparent in Primaries

The Vice Chairman of Election Commission of Maldives (ECM), Ismail Habeeb, has emphasised the need for transparency in the conduct of political parties’ primary elections.

In an interview with Adhadhu media, Habeeb acknowledged public concerns regarding the internal elections of political parties. He asserted that safeguarding the rights of candidates and voters is crucial in ensuring a fair internal election process.

Habeeb advocated for a voting system in internal elections and primaries that is transparent and enjoys the trust of the public. He warned that without transparency, the public may not accept the outcomes of such elections.

The internal elections of The Democrats have sparked concerns among various political parties, prompting Habeeb to highlight the significance of addressing these issues.

Asserting the current transparency of the electoral system in the Maldives, Habeeb referred to the last presidential election as evidence of its effectiveness. He maintained that the transparency of the electoral process was evident in the successful conduct of the previous presidential election.
