Minister of Economic Development and Trade Mohamed Saeed reassured the public that the Maldives is not currently facing any disruption to the import of essential commodities.

His statement comes in response to growing concerns following India’s recent ban on onion exports.

In a post on X, today, Minister Saeed acknowledged that fluctuations in the global food market and changes to export policies of individual countries are not uncommon. However, he emphasised that Maldives’ close trade partners have consistently prioritised the country, contributing to its stability.

Addressing the public, Saeed highlighted that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s administration considers food security as a top priority. He expressed the government’s commitment to addressing the issue with a sustainable and holistic solution.

The Indian government imposed a ban on onion exports until the end of March next year to manage domestic market prices amid a shortage.

Minister Saeed pointed out that India, a crucial source of essential imports for the Maldives, has historically made exemptions for neighboring countries, including the Maldives, during such export control measures.
