Education Minister Unveils Plans to Address Shortage of School Counselors Nationwide

Minister of Education Dr. Ismail Shafeeu has announced that measures are being put in place to ensure an adequate number of school counselors are trained to meet the needs of schools across the nation.

In a statement to the press, Minister Dr. Ismail Shafeeu addressed the prevalence of bullying incidents and other challenges within schools, citing a shortage of trained counselors as a key obstacle to effectively addressing these issues.

He noted that only 51 out of the 225 government schools nationwide currently have access to school counselors, leaving many schools unable to provide essential support and guidance to students facing various difficulties.

Minister Dr. Ismail Shafeeu expressed optimism that the situation would improve with the ongoing training programmes for school counselors. He revealed that, to date, 26 cases of bullying and similar incidents have been reported in schools, prompting the government to implement measures aimed at preventing such occurrences. 

Additionally, efforts are being made to raise awareness among teachers and parents while ensuring that students in need receive the necessary assistance.

Moreover, Minister Dr. Ismail Shafeeu emphasised the importance of schools adhering to established policies and regulations in addressing recurring incidents. He assured that no cases would be overlooked within the education system, affirming the commitment to resolving issues promptly and effectively.
