Education Minister Dr. Ismail Shafeeu highlighted the significant financial burden inherited by the Education Ministry, with a debt of MVR 120 million upon the commencement of the new administration.

This substantial debt, according to Minister Shafeeu, had impeded progress on numerous projects within the education sector.

Accompanying President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu on a tour of the southernmost atolls of the Maldives, Minister Shafeeu addressed the community of GDh. Gadhdhoo, his birthplace, today. He pointed out that many projects within the education sector had ground to a halt at the conclusion of the previous administration’s five-year term, attributing this cessation to the Ministry’s failure to remunerate contractors and its mounting debt.

However, Minister Shafeeu conveyed that strides had been made under the new administration’s stewardship, with MVR 50 million of the Education Ministry’s debt having been settled since assuming office.

“Through the collaborative efforts and leadership of Muizzu, we have disbursed MVR 50 million to contractors thus far,” he stated.

He further disclosed that preparations were underway to settle an additional MVR 43 million of the outstanding debt.

Minister Shafeeu affirmed the administration’s commitment to expediting the completion of education sector projects and reiterated its dedication to bolstering the education system.
