The Ministry of Education has announced the introduction of A-level programmes in five additional islands from the upcoming academic year, in a move aimed at addressing increasing demand from students wishing to continue their studies within their home communities.

The initiative marks a significant step in expanding access to higher secondary education across the country.

The decision follows a year of strong academic performance by island school students, particularly in their O-level examinations. According to the ministry, the selection of schools for expansion is based on where a sufficient number of students have completed Grade 10 with a notable proportion achieving high results.

Although the names of the five schools have not yet been disclosed, officials have indicated that the initiative is being designed with long-term sustainability in mind, ensuring that the programmes can be maintained effectively.

In addition to the geographic expansion, the ministry has revised its admission policy for higher secondary education. Under the new criteria, students who have passed three or four subjects in their O-level examinations will now be eligible to enrol in A-level programmes. This marks a departure from previous requirements that may have restricted access for some students.

The ministry stated that the policy shift is expected to open new opportunities for students to pursue their preferred fields of study and progress towards their career aspirations.
