Eggs, Onions and Watermelons Top Imports Ahead of Ramadan, Says MPL

The Maldives Ports Limited has revealed that eggs, onions and watermelons were the most imported and cleared goods between 15 February and the first four days of Ramadan.
According to the company’s weekly statistics, eggs topped the list, with 20,648 cases cleared from 15 to 21 February. This was followed by 18,576 sacks of onions. Watermelons, a staple item during Ramadan, ranked third with 9,871 cases cleared during the same period.
Other significant items cleared included 6,926 sacks of potatoes, 3,927 cases of bananas, 3,666 cases of pineapples, 3,550 cases of tomatoes and 2,825 cases of cabbage and kale. Smaller quantities of eggplant and papaya were also recorded, with 403 and 368 cases cleared respectively.
MPL stated that a wide range of other commonly consumed food items were processed in large volumes, including peppers, carrots, cucumbers, pumpkins, limes and breadfruit.
The company noted that clearance operations are being carried out at an accelerated pace to ensure an uninterrupted supply of essential food items throughout Ramadan.
Between 15 and 21 February, a total of 29,322 tonnes of cargo were cleared from the port. Of this, 26,469.21 freight tonnes arrived on container vessels, while 2,852.78 freight tonnes were transported by general cargo vessels.
During the same period, port staff processed 1,380 consignments, comprising 946 consignments from container vessels and 434 consignments from general cargo vessels.
