The NDMA has identified the islands of HDh. Finey, HA. Hoarafushi, Kelaa, Muraidhoo, Thakandhoo, Dhihdhoo, Utheemu, and Thuraakunu as the locations experiencing flooding.
Efforts to mitigate the impact of the floods have been initiated, with the Northern Area Command of the MNDF actively involved in draining water from some of these islands. In the case of Thakandhoo, the installation of two pumps is already underway to facilitate drainage.
The NDMA has acknowledged the challenges posed by simultaneous flooding on multiple islands, hindering the effective execution of drainage operations. Nevertheless, it’s noteworthy that no evacuation orders have been issued thus far.
However, water has penetrated some residential areas, resulting in reported damage. A comprehensive assessment of the extent of the damage will be conducted by local councils once the drainage work is completed.
