“We are a people who always look forward. This was an important election that clarified what needs to be done and the path to be taken. Furthermore, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has given his assurance that the government will do everything necessary to rectify matters in accordance with the pulse of the people,” he said.
The Maldives held nationwide elections yesterday, including local council elections, Women’s Development Committee (WDC) elections, and a public referendum on whether to ratify the Eighth Amendment to the Constitution, which proposed synchronising presidential and parliamentary elections.
Preliminary results showed a strong performance by the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), which is projected to secure all mayoral seats across the cities. Meanwhile, voters rejected ratifying the Eighth Amendment proposed by the government, signalling broad public sentiment against the proposed change.
