Environment Ministry Collaborates to Assess Villimale’s Water and Sewerage System

The Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy, in collaboration with State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) and Male’ Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC), has formalised a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to conduct a study on the water and sewerage system in Villimale’.
The signing ceremony, presided over by the Minister of Climate Change, Environment and Energy Thoriq Ibrahim on behalf of the Ministry, saw the participation of Mr. Hussain Fahmy, Managing Director of STELCO, representing the company. The agreement outlines a three-month timeline for the assessment, effective from the date of MoU signing.
The primary objective of this initiative is to assess the challenges associated with meeting the escalating demand for electricity services in Villimale’. The study aims to identify existing system issues, propose solutions, evaluate the anticipated demand over the next two decades, and formulate a comprehensive plan for system repair and upgrade, complete with an implementation strategy.
The MoU also encompasses provisions related to the city’s land use plan, clarification of government policies for energy sector development, facilitation of information retrieval from various government entities, and securing approval for the proposed project and action plan.
STELCO, as part of the MoU, assumes responsibilities such as conducting a 20-year demand study for electricity in the city, performing a technical assessment of the current infrastructure, determining the necessary investment for the upgrade, and preparing a project and action plan based on the findings.
The final submissions will be presented to the Ministry for further consideration and endorsement.
