EPA Fines Emerald Resorts for Unauthorized Development at Olhuveli Beach & Spa Resort
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has fined Emerald Resorts Pvt Ltd MVR 20,000 for commencing development work at Olhuveli Beach & Spa Resort without completing the mandatory Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA) processes.
Olhuveli Beach & Spa Resort is one of the resorts under the Sun Siyam resort chain, with it’s operations run under Emerald Resorts Pvt Ltd.

An investigation carried out by EPA revealed that the company had begun further construction without fulfilling the necessary steps outlined in the Regulation on the Preparation of Environmental Impact Assessment.
EPA said in a statement today that the company was fined for contravening regulations under the Environment Protection and Preservation Act. Documents exchanged between the company and the agency, along with the EPA’s observations, confirmed the breach of law.
According to EPA, Emerald Resorts was fined MVR 20,000 on December 11th, 2024, and the payment was made on December 18th, 2024.
The company has been instructed to ensure compliance with Environmental Impact Reporting Regulations for all future projects and to complete the necessary EIA procedures before proceeding with further developments.
