ERA Fines Singaporean Company MVR 12 Million for Damages after Cargo Boat Runs Aground in Milandhoo

The Environmental Regulatory Authority (ERA) has ordered Singaporean company Gloha Maritime Private Limited to pay a fine of MVR 12,006,200 for environmental damages caused when the cargo boat Shwe Lin Yone ran aground in Milandhoo, Shaviyani Atoll, on 3 October 2024.

Shwe Lin Yone, an agent of Atoll Navigation Services Private Limited and registered in the Republic of Niue, capsized on 19 October 2024.

ERA, together with a surveyor appointed by the vessel’s owner, conducted a joint assessment of the affected area on 7 and 8 November 2024. The survey found that 477 square metres of reef had been damaged.

Under the Environment Protection and Preservation Act and the Regulation on Determination of Fines and Compensation for Damages to the Environment, Glow Maritime Private Limited was instructed to pay the fine within 30 days. The company was officially informed of the decision on 19 November 2024.
