The Privileges and Ethics Committee has determined that the Vilufushi MP, Hassan Afeef, and the Vice-Speaker of the People’s Majlis, Eva Abdullah, have contravened parliamentary ethics.
This decision comes in the wake of the Supreme Court ruling that the motion of no-confidence against the Speaker of the People’s Majlis Mohamed Nasheed could proceed even in the absence of the Eva. Notably, the initial session of the House, lacking Eva’s presence, was overseen by Hassan Afeef.
Following a heated debate on the matter, a motion of order was acknowledged, leading Afeef, who was presiding, to adjourn the session.
Subsequently, a new session was scheduled for 11:30 p.m, chaired by Eva. However, the meeting was abruptly concluded, with Eva stating that it was in line with a resolution passed during the earlier session.
MDP Parliamentary Group Leader Mohammed Aslam filed a disciplinary case against Afeef with the Privileges and Ethics Committee.
The case argued that Afeef’s termination of the session violated procedural rules and impinged on the rights of the entire parliament. The committee, dominated by the MDP, unanimously deemed both sessions as illegitimate, referring the matter to the General Committee.
