A draw has been held to allocate 183 residential land plots in Eydhafushi, Baa Atoll, marking the first time in 36 years that land has been distributed to local citizens.

Eydhafushi Council first proposed a land allocation initiative in 2019, with plans to distribute 158 plots measuring 1,400 square feet. Although preparations were completed and applications were invited, the process was halted by the then-Ministry of Planning and Development due to concerns regarding the allocation policy.

Efforts resumed in 2020, with 662 individuals applying for the available plots. Following assessments and the publication of an interim list for public feedback, the process faced further delays after a legal challenge was filed in Eydhafushi Court, claiming irregularities in the allocation.

After the case was resolved, the Council revised the plan in March 2024, increasing the number of plots to 183 and reducing the size to 1,200 square feet to accommodate more recipients. A total of 525 applications were submitted in the most recent round.

The recipients were determined through a draw held on Tuesday at the Eydhafushi Football Stadium. The draw was conducted based on the points applicants received, with a secondary listing used to resolve tied scores. Land receipt certificates were distributed during the ceremony.
