The Secretariat of the Raa Atoll Fainu Council has reopened applications for residents and institutions to plant trees along the island’s streets under its “Veshi Fahi Fainu” programme.
In an announcement, the Secretariat said the initiative aims to enhance the island’s environment by encouraging greenery along public roads. The Council is granting permission to property owners to plant trees on the roadside adjacent to their homes. Local organisations and institutions may also apply, subject to the availability of space.
During this initial phase, the Council will approve one tree per household or institution. Applicants may choose either a fruit-bearing tree or an ornamental variety from a list approved by the Council.
Permitted fruit trees include starfruit (kaamara’nga), fresh areca nut (fenfoah), guava, wax apple (jamburoal), sapodilla (sabdheli), avocado, custard apple (atha), hog plum (ambulha), java plum (dhanbu), fig and longan.
The Council will also allow non-thorny flowering trees that provide shade, as well as other species specifically approved on a case-by-case basis.
Residents and institutions wishing to participate must submit their applications through the Council’s online portal by 12 February 2026.The Secretariat advised applicants seeking further clarification or assistance with the application process to contact the Council on 7515969.
