Fainu Island Council Appeals to President for Airport Construction
The Fainu Island Council has issued an appeal to President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu urging him to proceed with the construction of an airport on their island. However, they underscored the need for the government to address concerns previously raised by the council and ensure transparent communication with residents.
The decision to build the airport in Raa Fainu, amidst conflicting opinions within the atoll regarding its ideal location, has sparked debate and prompted the council to advocate for a comprehensive approach to addressing community concerns.
In a joint statement signed by three members of the island council, the importance of considering and disclosing all information transparently was highlighted. The council stressed the need for public consultation and technical assistance to effectively address any apprehensions surrounding the project.
Central to their appeal is the principle of decentralization, enshrined in law, which aims to empower local communities in the democratic process of development while ensuring transparency and accountability.
The council reiterated its legal jurisdiction over the island and emphasized its role in devising and approving a development plan in consultation with the local community. Concerns were raised regarding the absence of prior consultation with the council, particularly regarding designated areas for increasing financial viability and providing essential services.
During the presidential campaign, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu pledged to align the construction of the airport in Raa Fainu with the vision of former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom. This pledge resonated with residents of Raa Inguraidhoo, who expressed their desire for the airport to be built in Raa Fainu.
The project, initially entrusted to Island Aviation by former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, faced opposition from the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and environmentalists. Concerns were raised regarding the potential environmental impact, including the destruction of trees on the island. Consequently, the project was temporarily halted.
