The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has confirmed that the families evacuated from their homes during the heavy rainfall over the weekend have since returned, although the full extent of the damage is still being assessed.

Heavy rains over the weekend caused widespread flooding in the capital, Malé, and affected several other areas. Forty people from four different households were relocated to temporary shelters due to the flooding. In addition to Malé, five islands in Kaafu Atoll also experienced severe flooding.

NDMA Chief Executive Hisan Hassan stated that multiple homes across the five affected islands reported damage. A damage assessment is currently underway, with information being gathered on the scale of the destruction.

Most residential areas on the islands were inundated, with some islands also facing sewage leaks due to the flooding. Hisan noted that the NDMA is focusing on collecting data about damage to household items, including furniture and electronics, as part of the ongoing assessment.

In Malé, proactive measures by authorities helped limit the extent of the flood damage. The NDMA reported that sandbags were deployed at over 200 homes to prevent further flooding, and pumps were installed in key areas to facilitate the rapid draining of flooded streets.
