Independent presidential candidate Ahmed Faris Maumoon has issued a public apology for the suffering endured by some citizens during the tenure of the former President and his father Maumoon Abdul Gayoom.

In a video statement shared on Twitter, Faris acknowledged that there were individuals who had suffered injuries and emotional distress during President Maumoon’s rule and expressed his remorse for these past grievances.

“It is undeniably true that some individuals endured injuries and emotional distress during President Maumoon’s administration,” Faris stated.

“I am fully aware that there are still people who carry the burden of this suffering, and I do not wish to downplay their experiences. I offer my sincere apologies to those who were affected,” he continued.

Faris had recently stirred controversy when he stated in an interview that President Maumoon’s rule was not characterised by injustice, a remark that garnered criticism. In response to the backlash, Faris emphasised his commitment to addressing the grievances of those who had suffered.

“I am determined to provide comprehensive support and relief to all those who endured hardship during that period,” he clarified.

Furthermore, Faris pledged to make it a top priority to prevent such injustices from occurring under his potential administration.

In his farewell address, Maumoon also expressed his willingness to apologize to anyone who had been unjustly injured during his time in office.
