The Supreme Council for Islamic Fatwa issued a religious order yesterday stating that it is impermissible, or haram, for Muslims to seek employment in establishments that serve pork or alcohol.
Titled “Fatwa No.4 – In Regard to Muslims Working in Establishments That Serve Pork and Alcohol” , the order asserts that muslims are prohibited from working in establishments that produce or serve either product.
CIting verses from the Holy Quran, the council notes that all islamic scholars agree that income from employment in such establishments is not permissible in Islam; an exception can only be made if there is no other way to earn income.
Operating under the Ministry of Islamic Affairs, the council was established in 2016 to replace the Fiqh Maldivian Academy, under the second amendment to the Religious Unity Act during former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyom’s administration.
