Chairperson of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), Fayyaz Ismail, has expressed confidence that the internal issues within the party will be resolved, especially with the return of former members, including former President Mohamed Nasheed.

Speaking at a press conference held by the party today, Fayyaz stated that although the MDP has faced internal challenges in the past, the party can be strengthened through unity. He noted that the rejoining of Nasheed and his supporters, who had previously left to form The Democrats, marks a turning point for reconciliation and revitalization within the party.

“I believe that we can address these issues. The return of those who left is a positive sign,” said Fayyaz. “Things may not have happened in the best manner, but politics must be done without holding grudges.”

Nasheed Returns, Eyes on Unity

Mohamed Nasheed, who left the MDP two years ago after losing the party’s primary to former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, joined The Democrats later. Nasheed and a significant number of his supporters decided to dissolve The Democrats and rejoined the MDP.

On Monday night, the MDP hosted a special welcoming event where Nasheed addressed the crowd, calling for unity and reaffirming his commitment to securing victory in the upcoming local council elections. He also criticized the government’s economic management and emphasized the need for reforms.

Fayyaz: No Conditions for Nasheed’s Return

Fayyaz denied rumors that Nasheed had set conditions for his return to MDP. “There have been no discussions about any conditions or about him contesting in the party’s primary,” Fayyaz said, adding that Nasheed has not endorsed any candidate.

He also dismissed speculation that supporters of former President Solih were absent from the welcoming event. “MDP President Abdulla Shahid and I are both Solih’s supporters. Solih could not attend the gathering as he is currently abroad for medical purposes,” Fayyaz explained, noting that Solih had a cordial phone call with Nasheed following his return.

MDP Prepares to Celebrate 20th Anniversary

During the same press conference, MDP President Abdulla Shahid outlined the party’s upcoming anniversary celebrations. Shahid highlighted the significance of reaching the 20-year milestone and said the presence of multiple leaders within the party is a sign of strength.

“This is a proud moment for the MDP. The unity and leadership within the party will drive us forward,” Shahid stated.

As the party gears up for its anniversary, leaders remain optimistic that the renewed spirit of cooperation and unity will position the MDP strongly in the political landscape.

Celebrating 20 Years of MDP: Nationwide Events Planned

MDP President Abdulla Shahid and Chairperson Fayyaz announced a series of events planned to mark the party’s 20th anniversary, starting tomorrow.

Celebrations will begin with a breakfast at the party’s main headquarters, in Malé, followed by a flag-raising ceremony in Malé and across other parts of the country.

The anniversary celebrations will include:

  • Cake-cutting ceremonies
  • A futsal tournament
  • Special podcast episode
  • Community gatherings in every city across the Maldives starting next month

Fayyaz also revealed a major highlight of the anniversary: a nationwide rally beginning on July 18, where a symbolic torch will be carried to every inhabited island in the Maldives.

“There will be many more activities related to the anniversary. We want to make this a truly nationwide celebration,” said Fayyaz.

With Nasheed’s return, plans for unity, and a wide array of anniversary events, MDP is positioning itself for renewed momentum ahead of the upcoming elections.
