Former Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail has expressed concern over delays in announcing final results for some constituencies in Malé and called on the Elections Commission of Maldives (ECM) to publish them as soon as possible.

The ECM held nationwide elections on 4 April for local councils, Women’s Development Committees (WDC), and a public referendum on whether to ratify the proposed Eighth Amendment to the Constitution, which would change parliamentary terms and allow presidential and parliamentary elections to be held concurrently.

The Commission began announcing results yesterday via a livestream on Television Maldives’ YouTube channel, which ran for nearly 12 hours. However, final results for some constituencies were not released due to verification issues.

An ECM official speaking to MV+ said they have until April 17 to announce the final results.

“We are confirming verification issues of some vote boxes, but they will be announced before the date we are mandated by law, before April 17,” she said.

Fayyaz, in a post on X, said the delay in announcing permanent results for ballot boxes in Malé constituencies was concerning. He called on the Commission to release the results promptly without allowing any opportunity to influence the outcome.

Currently, the ECM is announcing the final results for the WDCs on a seperate Television Maldives stream.

Additionally, according to final results announced by the Elections Commission of Maldives, 58.47 percent of voters rejected the Eighth Amendment to the Constitution, totalling 148,859 votes. A further 67,680 people, or 31 per cent, voted in favour, while 4,577 ballots were declared invalid
