Fahi Dhiriulhun Corporation (FDC) has installed dustbins in flats across Hulhumalé to improve waste management, but residents continue to dispose of large items despite prohibitions.

FDC placed dustbins in 32 towers to facilitate the disposal of ordinary household waste. The corporation clarified that bottles, cardboard boxes, and other items not classified as household waste are not permitted in the bins.

FDC urged residents and stakeholders to strictly adhere to waste‑disposal regulations to maintain the cleanliness of the buildings and the surrounding environment.

Garbage dumping has become a persistent problem in Hulhumalé and other areas of the city, with waste often left on roadsides, particularly during Ramadan after house‑cleaning.

Recently, two individuals were fined a total of MVR 8,000 for dumping garbage in areas surrounding FDC towers in Phase II. Evidence collected by the corporation led to fines of MVR 5,000 and MVR 3,000 for the offenders.

FDC Managing Director Hamdhaan Shakeel noted that staff have observed some residents taking photos of discarded garbage and sharing them in community groups. He also highlighted cases where empty boxes are filled with waste, causing foul odours. On Monday night alone, 17 garbage trucks, each with a 25‑ton capacity, were emptied from FDC flats.
