FENAKA Dispatches 1600 Kilowatt Generator to Addu City Amid Power Outages

MV+ News Desk | August 7, 2024

FENAKA Corporation Limited has initiated efforts to deliver a 1600-kilowatt generator to Addu City, which is currently experiencing regular power outages due to insufficient generator capacity.

The city’s electricity demand can peak at 12 megawatts during busy hours. The Hithadhoo powerhouse, which supplies electricity to the connected islands, houses 20 generator sets with a total capacity of 26.8 megawatts. However, with five generators currently out of service, the maximum supply is limited to 15 megawatts.

Additionally, FENAKA has reported that power outages are also being caused by cables being severed during road development activities in the city.

The state-owned enterprise is bringing in the 1600-kilowatt generator to address the current electricity issues in Addu City, the second most populous city in the country. Environment Minister Ibrahim Thoriq has previously stated that the electricity issues in the city will be resolved within the month with the arrival of the new generator.

Minister Thoriq highlighted that the Hithadhoo central power station had been neglected during former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s administration, with no development to the facility during his five-year term. This neglect has contributed to the current state of the facility.

Furthermore, he mentioned that additional generators required for the station were not procured during the previous administration, and the ones currently in use were also not installed at that time.

Last April, the Maldivian government signed an agreement with a Chinese company to resolve the electricity issues in Addu City. FENAKA stated that the completion of this project would provide a permanent solution to the city’s power issues for the next 20 years.
