The Maldives Utility Regulatory Authority (URA) has imposed a fine of MVR 50,000 on FENAKA Corporation following an investigation into the electrocution death of an 18-year-old in Ungoofaaru.

The young man was electrocuted while attempting to rescue two children who were at risk of electrocution while playing near a puddle close to a street lamp.

In a statement released, the URA detailed the findings of their investigation. It was determined that the incident was caused by the failure to install crucial safety equipment, specifically earth leak circuit breakers (ELCB) and miniature circuit breakers (MCB), in the street lights.

The investigation further revealed that the absence of these safety measures is widespread, affecting street lights in many islands where FENAKA provides services.

The authority stated that the fine was imposed due to Fenaka’s negligence, which directly contributed to the tragic incident. FENAKA has been given 30 working days to pay the fine.

Additionally, the Utility Regulatory Authority has mandated that FENAKA install the necessary circuit breakers on all islands they service within 30 days. Should FENAKA be unable to meet this deadline, they are instructed to temporarily suspend the service to prevent similar incidents.

FENAKA Corporation has acknowledged in an inspection that most street lights across the islands lack adequate safety measures.
