In addition to the smart meters, FENAKA introduced a mobile app that allows customers to monitor their daily electricity usage via their smartphones. The newly installed smart meters are automated, replacing the previous analogue and digital meters.

The smart meters, supplied by China’s Dongfeng, are part of a broader initiative that includes the ongoing installation of similar devices in other islands of Dh. Atoll, HDh. Atoll, B. Atoll, M. Atoll, F. Atoll, Th. Atoll, and Fuvahmulah City. Fenaka plans to extend this service to all islands within its utility network over the next year.

Minister of Climate Change, Environment, and Energy, Thoriq Ibrahim, announced that smart meter services will be available across all Maldivian islands within the next three years.

Speaking at the ceremony in Dh. Kudahuvadhoo, Minister Ibrahim described the project as a significant advancement for the Maldivian energy sector. He highlighted that smart meters will help address the issue of rising electricity bills and ensure efficient energy use.

The new smart meters include a special app that enables users to track peak usage times, hourly, and daily usage, and identify potential electrical leaks. Minister Ibrahim emphasised that this technology represents a major step towards energy conservation and leak detection.

Fenaka Chief Technical Officer Abdulla Nashith noted that the project is being implemented in stages, with a goal to deploy the devices across all service islands within a year. He assured that the meters used in Kudahuvadhoo are standardised devices, also used in other countries.

Fenaka also committed to addressing the issue of rising electricity rates during the peak season from January to March with the introduction of these smart meters.
