State utility service provider FENAKA Corporation has decided not to charge customers in Fuvahmulah City for water usage in November following a major service interruption earlier in the month.

Fuvahmulah experienced a disruption to its water supply on 10 November, leaving more than 11,000 residents without access to water for three days. FENAKA attributed the interruption to contamination and leaks in the network. The company disinfected pipelines and storage tanks before resuming services on 13 November.

Despite assurances from the Maldives Food and Drug Authority that tests showed the water met World Health Organization safety standards, many residents have continued to report discoloured tap water and unpleasant odours. Numerous social media posts have shown images allegedly depicting the discolouration.

In a statement issued yesterday, FENAKA acknowledged ongoing disruptions and reduced pressure linked to recent repair works across the city’s water network. The utility provider said it would therefore waive water bills for all Fuvahmulah customers for the month of November.

FENAKA added that it is continuing efforts to resolve the issues and improve the quality of water services in the city.

Amid rising public concern, the Fuvahmulah City Council announced on 17 November that it intends to pursue legal action against FENAKA.
