Feridhoo Council President Suspended for Three Months Over Sexual Harassment Case

The Local Government Authority (LGA) has announced the three-month suspension of Alif Alif Atoll Feridhoo Council President Ismail Shah following a sexual harassment case filed against him.
The case was submitted to the Employment Tribunal on 16 June. In its verdict, the tribunal found that Shah had sexually harassed an assistant council officer. The decision followed an inquiry in which the victim’s statement, eyewitness accounts and Shah’s own statement were reviewed.

The LGA said Shah’s conduct violated the legal responsibilities entrusted to a council president.
According to a statement released by the LGA, Shah appealed the tribunal’s decision, claiming the verdict was reached without proper adherence to the Witnesses Act and the Employment Act. However, the authority noted that Shah failed to lodge his appeal with the High Court within the 30-day window allowed under tribunal guidelines.
The LGA added that the tribunal concluded Shah’s actions had directly affected council staff and disrupted the workplace environment. As a result, Shah has been suspended for three months without salary or any benefits associated with his position.
