Fifty-Six Crew Members Completes Rescue Divers Programme
The Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources has announced that fifty-six crew members have completed rescue divers programme.
The initiative, spearheaded by the government, aligns with the government’s commitment to implementing comprehensive fishing policies aimed at safeguarding the lives of fishermen at sea.
Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Resources, Ahmed Shiyam, took to social platform X to underscore the importance of equipping fishing vessels with certified rescue divers. He highlighted that the completion of the Rescue Diver Course by fifty-six individuals marks a significant milestone in this ongoing endeavour.
Notably, the training programme has seen participation from various regions, with divers hailing from islands across the south, including Gaaf Alif Atoll Kolamaafushi, Vilingili, Dhevvadhoo, Nilandhoo, and Dhaandhoo, as well as Gaaf Dhaalu Atoll Madaveli and Addu Atoll Maradhoo.
The initiative follows President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s address during last year’s commemoration of the 42nd National Fishermen’s Day, where he emphasised the urgent need for trained divers on fishing vessels to mitigate the risks faced by fishermen while at sea.
In response to this, Muizzu initiated the Rescue Divers Program, aiming to ensure that each fishing vessel is equipped with at least one diver possessing a rescue diver level certification.
